If you use Pinterest, either as a consumer or as a business, then you will know what a Pin is. In the basic sense, a Pin is a card of information which links back to the originating website.
In Pinterest’s own words “They’re like little bookmarks people add to Pinterest that always point back to the sites they came from”
What is a Rich Pin?
Rich Pins are Pinterest Pins which contain more useful information than a basic Pin.
Rich Pins can be created for:
- Products
- Recipes
- Movies
- Articles
- Places
A product Pin for example, can include info such as price, currency, availability and even related items. In fact, Pinterest are allowing retailers to provide all the information a buyer needs to make a purchase decision – before they even click on the Pin.
Probably the best thing (my favourite) about Product Pins is that anyone who has added your Pin will get a notification when the product drops in price. A savvy shoppers dream!
Recipe Pins can detail ingredients, prep time, cooking time… the list goes on. Place Pins include a map, address and phone number.
Rich Pins use a similar type of information delivery to Schema.org markup, which you may already use on your website. Google uses Schema.org markup to find the most relevant and useful information from your site to display in their search results. Rich Pins can be created using either oEmbed or Semantic markup; both common markup languages.
How do I create Rich Pins?
Once you have decided which Rich Pins you want to create, you will need to add some meta tags to your website. See the Pinterest Developers site for more info or talk to your web tech team. You will then need to validate your rich pins and apply to get them on Pinterest. It sounds time-consuming but it’s really not that bad and well worth it if you are already using Pinterest as a business.
Some website solutions have modules available which can create Rich Pins automatically so it’s worth looking into this if you are using a popular CMS such as Magento or Drupal.
