As with everything in this life, there are positive and negatives that we should be aware of. This extends to improving search engine ranking positions on Google, so we want to show you what you should AVOID doing if you want to see your site do well…
- Avoid Adding Low Quality Links – Link farms and spam sites can damage your site’s Google rankings, so steer clear of any low quality links.
- Think About Hosting – Many people overlook this factor, but here at WMG, we see it as being very important. If you are based in the UK your site should be hosted in the UK. Similarly, wherever you are based in the world, you should have a hosting company from the same country. A reputable hosting company is a must, so that Google spiders and web visitors can find your site.
- Don’t Do Duplicate – Duplicate content is a big ‘no-no’. The Googlebot will recognise the content if it has already appeared on hundreds of other sites and your search engine ranking will be penalised. Expect to see a serious drop in rankings if you get caught with duplicate content.
In addition, your meta tags should not be duplicated either, so the golden rule is to be unique.
- Never Underestimate the Googlebot! – It will be able to decipher any link fraud so don’t get caught out with link scams.
- Avoid Keyword Stuffing – Trying to stuff all your keywords into a short text area will throw up a red flag to Google. It’s not natural and it won’t benefit your site. Keywords should be placed in your content effectively and accurately. Keyword density in body text should be no more than 3%.
- Avoid Frames – Frames are still used by some web developers, but they make it really difficult for the bot to crawl your site. They can get in but can’t always get out, so your page won’t get indexed and this jeopardises your search engine ranking position.
These are just a few tips of what not to do if you want to improve your search engine ranking, so it’s useful to bear these in mind when looking at optimising your site.
